Guided Duck Hunting on the Legendary Platte River and Lake McConaughy
Come and join us for some of the most spectacular waterfowl hunting in the country in America’s Heartland. The Platte River system is a waterfowling Mecca. Some of the greatest waterfowling in the United States takes place along the river. But like all waterfowling destinations there’s one necessary ingredient-water. Timing is everything with duck hunting. And the time to hunt Nebraska’s Lake McConaughy could not be better. Water is a valuable commodity in the West. Everyone wants their fair share and ducks do not take priority. Nebraska’s largest body of water, 36,000-acre Lake McConaughy, has been plagued by drought for decades. Only recently have spring rains and mountain snows began to fill the reservoir again. Vegetation that has been growing on the dry lakebed is now being flooded and waterfowl are returning to the lake in record numbers. Hunting last fall was the best waterfowling Lake McConaughy has experienced in decades and a continued rise in the water levels promises to make for spectacular waterfowling this fall. Don’t miss out on your chance to experience some of the best waterfowling in the country. Gnat’s Charters provides guided waterfowl hunts on Lake McConaughy with Captain Mike Gnatkowski. Capt. Mike is a licensed USCG captain, outdoor writer, expert caller and guide with decades of waterfowling experience. His knowledge of waterfowl habits and hunting experience guarantee a memorable day. Hunting is done from the comfort of a stable, comfortable 20-foot pontoon boat that is ideal for hunting the big waters of Lake McConaughy. A major portion of the waterfowl that migrate down the Central Flyway use the Platte River system and Lake McConaughy. The variety is incredible, with nearly every species of puddle duck and diving duck available- handsome drake widgeon are common, bull pintails, gorgeous redheads plus three species of geese. And don’t forget the mallards; plenty of fat, Central-Flyway mallards. Make your reservations early. Nebraska offers an early teal season in September that is loads of fun. Shooting is fast and furious for these speedsters and they are great eating. The regular duck season opens in early October and runs into January. Central Flyway limits are generous. Prime time is from opening day until the lake begins to freeze in late November or early December.
